How Many Hostages Does Hamas Have?

As of June 1st, 2025, there are 58 hostages remaining in the Gaza Strip:

  • 23 are presumed to be alive:

Hamas Hostages FAQ

1. How Many Hostages Have Been Released So Far?

So far, 148 hostages have been released, and 49 bodies have been returned for burial in Israel. Israeli troops conducted several military operations in Gaza to try to rescue hostages. However, with a few exceptions, most hostages and bodies were released after ceasefires and prisoner exchanges, where Israel agreed to free terrorists serving life sentences for deadly attacks against Israelis.

Below is a short list of Palestinian prisoners released in exchange for the Israeli hostages and bodies held by Hamas:

  1. Ibrahim Shalash: Hamas operative, sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and conspiracy. Released in the Shalit deal, rearrested in 2014.
  2. Ibrahim Salah: Sentenced in 1992 to two life terms plus 20 years for murdering Prof. Menachem Stern, Eli Amsalem, and Hussein Zaid. Rearrested in 2015 after stabbing a policeman.
  3. Adham Younis: Senior Islamic Jihad member, serving five life terms for involvement in the 2005 Netanya mall bombing (five killed, over 40 injured).
  4. Osama al-Ashkar: Senior Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades member, serving eight life terms for orchestrating attacks in 2002 killing eight Israelis.
  5. Ahmed Barghouti: Fatah military commander, serving 13 life terms for killing 12 Israelis during Second Intifada attacks, including suicide bombings in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
  6. Ahmed Dahidi: Islamic Jihad leader, two life sentences for involvement in 2003 murder of Eli Biton in a shooting attack.
  7. Ahmed Aref al-Asafra: Hamas member, life sentence for kidnapping and murdering Dvir Yehuda Sorek (19) in 2019.
  8. Ahmed Abid: Hamas operative, arrested in 2017 after crossing from Gaza; provided intelligence on Hamas tunnel activities.
  9. Ahmed Obeid: Hamas operative from East Jerusalem, serving seven life terms for sending a suicide bomber to Café Hillel in Jerusalem (2003), seven killed, 64 injured.
